12.04.04   19:06
Former "American Idol" contestant RJ Helton has signed with the management company of Mathew Knowles, best known for launching the careers of his daughter Beyonce Knowles and her group Destiny's Child.
A top-five finalist on the talent show's first season two years ago, Helton recently saw his debut album, "Real Life" (B-Rite Music), bow at No. 14 on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart. He was previously managed by his mother, Sue.

Knowles says he plans to promote Helton to the pop, Christian and gospel communities via his Music World banner, a division of U.K.-based music conglomerate Santuary Group.

Helton is confirmed for several upcoming TV appearances, including "American Idol" on Wednesday (April 14), where he will promote the album and its lead single, "Even If," and "Prime Time Live" with Diane Sawyer next month.

Ah! Don't put yourself down Ange
19.04.04   19:01
As Kylie and Beyonce prepare to plight their troths, we over eagerly shake Angelina Jolie's hand for bringing a ray of sunshine to La-La land.

The perfect lady specimen has pledged to keep stripping until she reaches the age of 40.

Hoorah!

Can we have that in writing, Ange?

As various Hollywood lovelies keep their prized assets (and asses) covered unless the price is right, Lara Croft lovely Angelina says she sees no problem in baring more than her soul on the big screen.

That is at least until son Maddox gets old enough to squirm with embarrassment at Mummy is doing her nork-flashing trick yet again.

"I think I'm OK until my son's a teenager, I'll have to handle it then," said the bee-lipped babe, counting up how long we have left of seeing her as nature intended.

"I don't get funny about nudity. It's not something I'm overly shy about."

And apparently her latest film, Taking Lives with Ethan Hawke, will confirm her keenness to do away with clothes and feel the breeze.

However, we smell a rat in Jolie's jabberings, as this is the same saucy, er, saucepot, who claimed her strategically placed tattoos stopped directors filming her naked.

Might the anatomically accurate Ange be toying with our affections in a bid to promote her latest film?

Surely it cannot be so!

After all the talented tease adds: "I reveal more of myself when I'm extremely open emotionally than when I've got my shirt off."

PETA and Beyoncé
23.04.04   00:20
Looks like Beyoncé Knowles is ready to fire back at the animal rights group that has been attacking her.

The Bootylicious singer has been targeted by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals because she wears fur.

Yesterday, a man identifying himself as Matthew Knowles, Beyoncé’s father and manager, called Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA. Newkirk says that Caller ID showed that the call came in from Sony, Knowles’ label. “I wasn’t in, but he left a message, ‘Tell her we’re going to get to know each other very, very well,’” Newkirk tells The Scoop. “You could take that as a good sign — if you’re Julie Andrews. If, however, you’re a realist, you look for a subpoena.”

Matthew Knowles didn’t return The Scoop’s calls, but Newkirk says she respects Beyoncé — other than her fur wardrobe. “She is a such a sexy icon, she doesn’t need to drape herself in a bit of a corpse,” Newkirk said. “She wants to look hot, not cold.”

Prince's Musicology tour
23.04.04   02:38
TORONTO (CP) - Prince has added a second show in Toronto to his current tour, which is being promoted as the last time he plays his hits live.

His concert promoter announced Wednesday that the rock star's Musicology tour will be at the Air Canada Centre on July 28, in addition to the sold-out July 27 show.

The concert will have a centre stage surrounded by seats.

When the tour opened in Los Angeles last month, an AP music reviewer said Prince blasted through his 25-year catalogue of hits with "more panache, whimsy and skill than anyone in music today."

The tour coincides with the release of a new CD, and comes on the heels of Prince's recent opening performance at the Grammys with Beyonce.

Prince, who has sold more than 100 million records, maintains a home in Toronto's posh Bridle Path neighbourhood.

Broadway Star in the Pink
23.04.04   02:40
A Broadway star has been added to the cast of MGM's The Pink Panther. According to The Hollywood Reporter, stage actress Kristin Chenoweth has landed her first feature acting role in the film. Chenoweth is a Tony award winner and the star of the current Broadway smash Wicked.

The singer-actress is reportedly close to a deal that would add her to the cast of the comedic detective tale. She would star alongside Steve Martin, Kevin Kline, Beyonce Knowles and Jean Reno. Chenoweth, who is committed to Wicked until July 18, would film her part in the comedy in between her Broadway duties.

Martin stars as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau who is hired by Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Kline) to take over the case of the missing Pink Panther Diamond. Dreyfus selects Clouseau because of his goofy reputation, hoping to make himself look better when he solves the crime.

Knowles (Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Fighting Temptations) plays Xania, a pop star whose mysteriously deceased boyfriend recently owned the fabled diamond – she becomes the prime suspect. Reno (Ronin, The Professional) will portray Ponton, Inspector Clouseau's driver who is actually an undercover cop assigned to keep an eye on him.

THR tips that Chenoweth will star as "the sexy French public relations executive for the soccer team who gets mixed up in the investigation." She would have reportedly played opposite David Beckham, but his schedule couldn't be worked out.

Len Blum (Private Parts, Stripes) wrote the script for the film which was recently polished by Martin. Shawn Levy (Cheaper by the Dozen, Just Married) is directing.

The Pink Panther starts shooting next month in New York before moving to Paris. TPP is tentatively scheduled for a July 22, 2005 release. MGM hopes to launch a franchise with the film.

Beyonce Shows Up For Beanie Sigel Trial
23.04.04   22:27
A jury is still deliberating in the attempted murder case of local rapper Beanie Sigel and Friday some of music's superstars were in the courtroom.
Beyonce Knowles, Jay-Z, Freeway and Damon Dash all made an appearance on the third floor of the Criminal Justice Center late Friday afternoon in support of Sigel.

Sigel is on trial for the shooting last July of Terrance Speller. Police said Sigel shot Speller outside the Pony Tail Bar on 52nd Street in west Philadelphia. Sigel maintains his innocence.

The jury of seven women and five men is wrestling with the case. Earlier this week, the jury told the judge they were having trouble reaching a verdict. The judge told the jury to keep trying.

More than a dozen musicians and producers have surrounded Sigel during the trial, most of those supporters are from his record label, Rockefella.

The jury asked to see more evidence in the case and the judge approved that request.

In addition to attempted murder, Sigel, 30, whose real name is Dwight Grant, is charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses and could face 20 to 40 years in prison if convicted.

Sigel has sold more than 1 million records and made a movie called "State Property," produced by Rockafella Films.

Beyonce to perform at Couric charity
23.04.04   22:29
NEW YORK -- Beyonce, Harry Connick Jr. and Nathan Lane are among the performers lined up to belt out tunes from "South Pacific" on the world's largest cruise ship Saturday at a fund-raiser for Katie Couric's colorectal research organization.

About 1,000 people will attend the event, which is expected to raise at least $4 million, said Couric, the co-host of NBC's "Today" show. It will take place on the Queen Mary 2, which arrived in Manhattan for the first time Friday. At 151,400 tons, the liner is three times larger than the Titanic.

"Cunard (Line) approached some people at my organization about a year ago and very generously offered to host our next event," Couric said. "At that point I thought, 'What next event?' but given their offer I felt like I needed to plan another one."

Couric partnered with the Entertainment Industry Foundation in 2000 to found the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance after her husband died of colon cancer.

The number of colonoscopy screenings has increased 20 percent since the center opened, according to the center.

Nicole Kidman, Antonio Banderas, Glenn Close and Jon Bon Jovi also are expected to attend the dinner and performance of Richard Rodgers' works, which includes "Oklahoma!" and "The Sound of Music."

Couric said she thought she'd interviewed all the performers at least once.

"After 13 years on the 'Today' show, you've pretty much interviewed everyone," she said. "I personally reached out to them. I called them personally to see if I could twist their arms."

Tattle | In wax, Beyonce's got to have the right bounce
EVEN WAX MUSEUMS have to change with the times.

It's not surprising that Madame Tussauds is creating a sculpture of Beyonce. What is surprising is that according to the London Sun, the museum's wax wizards have been working for the last three months to create a moving bottom for the faux Beyonce to ensure that the wax figure does the Beyonce bounce.

When she's not on tour or at the Beanie Sigel trial, Beyonce has reportedly been making secret visits to the museum to make sure the booty makers gets the booty shaker just right.

Pirates
04.05.04   19:16
Johnny Depp reportedly wants Rolling Stones rocker Keith Richards to appear in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequel -- as his father.

How great would that be?!

The hottie actor famously based his character Jack Sparrow on the aged rocker in the celebrated film, and wants to pay tribute to Richards by landing him a role in the follow-up, according to IMDb.com.

A source says, "Johnny was slightly embarrassed by all the praise for "Pirates," because he was really just being Keith. A good way of thanking Keith would be to get him to do a walk-on in the sequel."

JUNKYARD JEWEL: Proving the adage yet again that one man's trash is another's treasure, a radio station has collected the smashed front grill from Billy Joel's car wreck last month and is auctioning it off for Long Island charities.

Joel suffered minor injuries when he lost control of his vintage 1967 Citroen on a rain-slicked road near his Long Island home on April 25 and slammed into a house. The singer-songwriter escaped with only a small cut on his left ring finger.

The wreck was the third in two years for Joel.

WBLI radio morning show co-host Steve Harper said Monday that the grill is being offered on eBay, where it will remain until 12:45 p.m. Thursday.

The station's "Slam the Stunt Man," collected the debris off the street at the crash site, Harper said. A Nassau County police spokesman said Joel has not asked for the grill back, so there's no legal reason the station can't sell it.

CALLING ALL LATOYA FANS: With "American Idol" heading into its nail-biting final weeks, the heavy hitters are coming out. To wit: Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown's hot on the LaToya London campaign.

Tonight, Brown is hosting a LaToya London Day proclamation ceremony (read: "American Idol" party) at 7:45 at Everett and Jones Barbecue, 126 Broadway.

Word has it, he'll stick around long enough to phone in a vote for LaToya at the conclusion of "American Idol," at 9 p.m.

CAT FIGHT! CAT FIGHT! Beyonce and Alicia Keys are reportedly on bad terms on their current Ladies First Tour -- because both are grappling for star billing.

Beyonce is apparently furious because many critics have said Alicia "steals the show," while Alicia is reportedly unhappy that Beyonce features far more prominently on the promotional posters for the extravaganza.

A source tells Britain's "Heat" magazine, "There's barely a word exchanged between the two of them, and their entourages are purposely kept separate. Beyonce is the tour headliner, and Alicia feels as if she's being treated like a second-class citizen."

The source adds that the disputes between the pop pair have gotten increasingly petty: "One argument between the two camps was whose bus was going to be closer to the back stage door, a distance of 40 feet at most."

No. 1 hit
16.05.04   20:25
As the number of hip-hop and rock stars in the clothing business grows, it is getting harder for shoppers to know whether they're in Macy's or Tower Records.

In department stores all over America, shoppers are finding the Fetish line by rapper Eve, and men's clothing by 50 Cent and Eminem. There are green track suits by Sean Combs, aka rapper P. Diddy, and whole boutiques of Jennifer Lopez's white stretch jumpsuits and Gwen Stefani's handbags. On Tuesday, Grammy Award-winning singer Beyonce Knowles announced that she, too, would try for a crossover hit on Seventh Avenue.

"They're jumping on the bandwagon; even celebrities not known for their fashion are taking a shot," Combs said, adding, "A lot of people can lose their shirts messing with this business. It's one of the hardest businesses in this world."

Inspired by the successes of recording moguls like Russell Simmons, Jay-Z and Combs -- who has announced he will expand his repertory of casual street clothes to include pinstriped suits this fall -- a new pop star seems to make the leap from performer to designer every week.

They have seen that there is money to be made and a chance to extend the fleeting fame of a music video star into a brand that could last far longer. Combs' 5-year-old Sean John Clothing company, one of the most successful of the lines created by music stars, sold $300 million at retail last year in more than 2,000 stores; executives dream of reaching $1 billion in sales in five years and eventually rivaling Ralph Lauren.

Knowles, who won five Grammys this year for her solo CD "Dangerously in Love," said in an interview last week that many artists "have more insight into fashion than people think."

"We have a lot of experience on the red carpet and fashion shows," she said. "We might as well have our own lines."

Yet, clothing manufacturers and licensing experts predict that, for every platinum-level fashion hit like Sean John, some other brands will end up in half-off bins, as their creators discover that clothing shoppers can be even more fickle than music fans.

"Some are clearly winners; some are not doing so well," said George L. Jones, the president and chief executive of Saks Inc. Department Store Group, which also operates Proffitt's and Carson Pirie Scott. The top performers, he said, are Sean John and Rocawear, the line of hip-hop artist Jay-Z; the ones not doing so well are the Shady line by Eminem and G-Unit clothes from the rapper 50 Cent.

Eve, a 24-year-old rap star who favors pink cornrows and Dolce & Gabbana outfits, created her Fetish label last year under circumstances that now seem typical -- she was a noted influence on pop clothing styles, and had appeared on the cover of Teen Vogue. So she sold a license to use the Fetish name to a California company with experience making and selling clothes.

"I don't sketch; I can't draw or anything like that," said Eve. "But I have a design team, and they come up with ideas. I approve or disapprove."

Does her current line of tie-dyed tank tops and denim miniskirts represent her style? "Not really," she said, adding that she was dissatisfied with her licensee and intended to switch to another one for her fall collection. "The new clothes," she said, "are much more like me, you know, my personal style."

Even taking into account her dissatisfaction with the earlier line, Eve's brand of clothing and accessories has sold $50 million retail, according to Anthony Ottimo, a division president of Innovo Group, the California company that handles Fetish.

Stefani, the sexy singer and songwriter who fronts the band No Doubt and styles herself a punk Marilyn Monroe, has placed her LAMB clothing collection at Barneys New York and Bergdorf Goodman, a unit of Neiman Marcus. An executive in her company says she took in $55 million at retail in her first two seasons.

Popular music has influenced fashion since, well, the beginning of popular music. Whether it was Frank Sinatra's porkpie hat (tilted just so) or Billie Holiday's single white flower, what singers and performers wore had enormous sway over their fans' wardrobes. For most of pop-music history, though, performers were content to limit their clothing ventures to concert T-shirts.

Various celebrities have created fashion lines, including actress Jaclyn Smith for Kmart (one of the most successful celebrity lines of all time, analysts say) and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, actresses who are twins, for Wal-Mart. But music stars did not seriously enter the business until Simmons, the hip-hop impresario, founded Phat Fashions in 1992. The company was sold early this year for $140 million to Kellwood Co., a major clothing producer based in St. Louis.

Emil Wilbekin, the creative director of Vibe magazine, said branching beyond the recording business into clothing was pioneered by African-American producers and artists, out of a sense of pride. "It started in the black community," he said. "Hip-hop was centered on retaining black ownership of black culture."

Seth M. Siegel, a licensing expert who heads the Beanstalk Group, a consulting business in New York, agreed. "Russell Simmons empowered an urban audience and authenticated the brand as a fashion name," he said. By contrast, many of the celebrities signing up now "are just fakes" he said, "trying to piggyback on the success of others."

"Everyone is saying, 'I want to be the next one in,' but as with most gold-rush scenarios, it's the first ones who will make the money -- and there will be a lot of wreckage later," Siegel said.

Because they are private companies, the pop-star lines do not disclose their financial results. Retailers and other experts say the most successful are often the ones in which the celebrity is most involved and has a clearly defined fashion image.

Jennifer Lopez's clothing venture has been viewed skeptically within the industry since its founding in 2001, but executives at her company, Sweetface Fashion, say it is doing well. Estimates of total revenues in 2004 are $375 million, they said, compared with sales of $250 million last year.

Siegel suggested it was a stretch for a singer and actress like Lopez to assume she could also be a fashion designer. "What authority does she have about fashion?" he said. "This is the nature of licensing in general: Just because someone is an authority in their field -- music, for instance -- that doesn't mean their name is extendible."

But even the naysayers concede that Lopez's perfume, Glow, has been a commercial success, and her lingerie line appears to be exceeding initial projections.

Denise V. Seegal, the chief executive of Lopez's clothing company, acknowledged that apparel for teenagers and young women was selling less well than she had expected, but said it was still doing better than many of its rivals in the same market.

"Velour track suits drove our business last year," she said. "That business slowed down terrifically, and we've had to make it up with denim and young fashion. The good news is that you can change your product."

Over Memorial Day weekend, Lopez will be in Moscow for a fashion show marking the opening of her first JLo by Jennifer Lopez retail store.

To Crystal Williams, a 19-year-old student at Bronx Regional High School who was shopping at Macy's flagship store in Herald Square on Tuesday, the fact that an article of clothing has a celebrity's label does not necessarily make her want to buy it.

"It's quality and pricing, too -- a lot of celebrities' clothes are reasonably priced," said Williams, who was dressed in a red jersey, jeans, Nike sneakers and a red plaid hat with "Von Dutch" on it. "I like J.Lo's, and Eve's clothes are pretty hip now." She paused. "They're not leaving any room for anyone new, but I guess it's good to stretch your abilities."

Keith Sean, a 33-year-old choreographer from Los Angeles who was shopping in the Sean John shop in Macy's, agreed. "If I was a celebrity," he said, "I'd definitely do it."

Beyonce Knowles and Bruce Springsteen, with No. 5 BMG
24.05.04   20:12
In BRUSSELS story headlined "EU says to issue objections to Sony-BMG deal soon", please read in fifth paragraph "...ahead of Warner Music Group, the record firm recently acquired by Edgar Bronfman, Jr...." instead of "...ahead of Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Music Group..." (corrects ownership of Warner Music Group).

A corrected repetition follows.

BRUSSELS, May 24 (Reuters) - The European Commission said on Monday it would issue a statement of objections soon about plans by Sony Music <6758.T> and BMG to combine their music units.

"I don't think that I'll be breaching any secrets by saying that there will be a statement of objections," a Commission spokeswoman told a news conference.

"I expect that this will be happening very soon now."

The 50-50 joint venture combines No. 2 Sony, which includes such artists as Beyonce Knowles and Bruce Springsteen, with No. 5 BMG, a unit of German media firm Bertelsmann [BERT.UL] that is home to Britney Spears and Elvis Presley.

The deal creates a company rivalling leader Universal Music Group and vaults the new firm ahead of Warner Music Group, the record firm recently acquired by Edgar Bronfman, Jr., and EMI Group Plc <EMI.L>.

Britain's youth would now rather spend their pocket money on a new ring-tone for their mobile phone than on buying the latest music on CD.

Official recognition of the extraordinary rise of a cultural phenomenon that may come to the rescue of the stricken music industry will emerge next week with the publication of the first "Ring Tone Chart".

The chart, which is backed by the British Phonographic Industry and is being compiled by the accountants KPMG, will highlight an industry that has grown toabout £70m within the UK. Singles sales were worth only £63m last year. The rise of the ring-tones has been driven by technological advances that mean mobile phones can reverberate to the sound of the original music recording.

Ralph Simon, who founded Your Mobile, the company that introduced ring-tones to the UK six years ago, said the sound of a person's phone was an indication of their character. "People don't buy the music so that they can listen to it like they do a CD at home. It's something that you would want to play to friends or work-mates as your social identifier," he said.

Although the latest pop hits are also among the most in-demand ring-tones, many mobile phone users are choosing to align themselves with familiar theme tunes from film and television.

The themes to Only Fools and Horses, The Simpsons and the macho "Eye of The Tiger" from the soundtrack to the film Rocky III and seasonal tunes like "Summertime" are rivalling pop-chart favourites such as Frankee and Eamon. The American singer Beyoncé Knowles has sold more than half a million ring-tones of each of her last two releases in the UK, the equivalent of a gold disc.

A growing proportion of Britain's 45 million mobile phone users are willing to part with around £3 for a "true tone" ring-tone, which is in effect a 30-second soundbite of the original recording. The technology even allows for phone owners to have one ring-tone for calls from their boyfriend and another for when they are being rung by their mother.

Britain has emerged as one of the strongest European markets for the trend, alongside Finland, which is the home of the mobile telephone giant Nokia.

Mr Simon said: "What's happening in Europe is that for the first time you are seeing more ring-tones sold than singles. There is a growing awareness that mobile music is becoming an ... imperative for the future of the music business, which is going through tough times."

Britain is now set to beat the United States to having an official ring-tone chart. The first ring-tone top 20 will be published in the magazine Music Week next Monday.

David Simmons, chairman of the Mobile Entertainment Forum Ring Tone Initiative, first had the idea for the chart two years ago. "There was this huge intellectual gap between the mobile phone industry and the music industry, which was reading about the growth of this new business but not seeing any of the cheques."

Calum Chace, a director of KPMG, said that unlike the unsophisticated "plonkety-plonk" early ringtones, which only generated publishing royalties for the music industry, the radio quality sounds now available commanded far more substantial mechanical royalties.

Ajax Scott, editor of Music Week, said: "The music industry has always been about selling records, concert tickets and merchandise. Technology is changing all that."

Executives at the music giant Sony yesterday promised not to commission illegal poster campaigns after being threatened with legal action normally used to tackle unruly teenagers.

Two executives faced the prospect of having anti-social behaviour orders (Asbos) imposed on them as part of Camden council's drive against flyposting, which it says is blighting parts of the north London borough.

The executives, Jo Headland, Sony's UK marketing director, and Catherine Davies, the managing director of its UK repertoire division, gave an undertaking not to order flyposting.

The council, which claims the company saves millions of pounds every year in advertising by flyposting, hailed the development as a victory. It said similar actions could follow across England and Wales.

A second action against another music company, BMG, stalled because the council had targeted a woman who was only with the company on work placement and is leaving next week.

However, Camden insisted that it would pursue BMG. It said it was also "looking actively" at another 50 companies and organisations that had been flyposting in the borough.

Because of Camden's reputation as a neighbourhood with a vibrant nightlife, it has been a particular target for illegal poster campaigns, especially those advertising new albums and music events.

Camden estimates that flyposting saves Sony, whose artists include Beyoncé Knowles and George Michael, £3m a year, and BMG, which has Dido and Avril Lavigne on its books, more than £5m. Meanwhile, removing the posters from telephone boxes, shop hoardings and postboxes costs the borough £250,000 a year.

Last week, lawyers for Sony wrote to Camden promising: "Each of our clients will undertake ... not to knowingly commission, instruct, procure or arrange ... to erect posters" contrary to planning and highway laws.

Andrew Glennie, for Camden, told Highbury Corner magistrates court yesterday that in the light of the agreement with Sony, it was appropriate to withdraw the summons against the company.

The court also heard that because the person targeted by the council at BMG, Lucy Handford, was leaving next week, the summons against her should also be withdrawn.

Outside the court, Richard Gruet, the head of litigation at Camden, said: "We have won an undertaking from Sony to the effect that they will not engage in flyposting any more in this country."

He said the Asbo process - which could have resulted in the executives being jailed for five years - could be reactivated if the council or any authority in England and Wales found posters which it believed could be traced to Sony.

Mr Gruet said naming individual executives was a legitimate tactic. "Anti-social behaviour is anti-social behaviour, whoever engages in it. If anybody indulges in it they should not think that just because they are rich and live in a nice house they are immune to prosecution."

Pete Strange, the boulevard project manager at the council, said there had been a noticeable decrease in the number of illegal entertainment industry posters being put up.

A number of councils, including Greater Manchester, Hastings in Sussex and Islington in north London, have contacted Camden to seek advice about the tactic.

As well as chasing BMG, Camden is planning to tackle political parties and pressure and community groups which use flyposting.
